Acne during the teenage years is almost a given for many young individuals. Unfortunately developing acne when you are an adult feels completely unfair.
The common age group for adult acne can be anywhere from your twenties, thirties, forties and even fifties, courtesy of menopause.
Hormones are a major player which is why it is much more common in women than it is in men.
What actually causes adult acne?
- Cosmetic products or creams – Causing irritation (Especially with sensitive skin)
- Strong family history of adult acne
- Medication side effects including supplements
- Dietary factors – Certain food types, sugar or even lactose intolerance
The common areas affected are around the mouth, chin and even the forehead.
The challenge with adult acne is that the same treatment used in younger individuals does not work as well. More aggressive treatment is required which may include removing any external factors like creams and irritants. Changing the diet or even trying an elimination diet. Antibiotic creams, oral contraceptives and isotretinoin.
