What are Dermal Fillers and why all the Hype?

Cosmetic injectables or dermal fillers have been a secret of the celebrities for over 2 decades. The initial fillers were very expensive and some of them were permanent.

These days the price has dropped significantly and there are many brands in the market that provide different profiles for every face out there.

So what are they and why the hype?

Essentially they are gel like substances containing hyaluronic acid that is already naturally found in your skin. As you get older, you lose hyaluronic acid that gives you the volume and tightness in the skin.

This then leads to a more narrow or gaunt looking face versus an optimal face that is more love heart or oval in shape.

By using dermal fillers, areas that have lost volume can then be re-inflated or rejuvenated to give a more youthful and fresher look. Generally dermal fillers can last from anywhere between 12 to 18 months. This really depends on how quickly your body metabolises and breaks it down. They are measured in 1 ml or 1 CC and come in syringes that are pre-filled. The amount needed varies between 1 to 3 syringes, but the trend now is to move into less is best. At least that is our motto in DRV Skin.

The fear for most patients is that they do not want to look overdone. They have seen shows such as “Botched” and probably also know some friends that have had a little too much done, giving them a very fake look.

The key in anything and especially with dermal fillers is proportion. Every part of your face has to be thought of and the key is to not change your face and make you look different. Rather it is to give you a natural looking appearance.

It is all about symmetry.
