Double Chin Treatment
The dreaded double chin, is one of the most stubborn places to remove fat, even by diet and exercise. The fat found here is known as submental fat. Due to genetic factors as well as weight gain, this area can often be very prominent for some patients and cause concern.
What is Double Chin treatment and how does it work?
Double Chin treatment is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, that does not need general anaesthetic and only involves injections.
For the right candidate, the use of fat dissolving injections can reduce the fat in areas under the neck creating a more defined jaw line. The treatments are not for patients who have very saggy skin, as it predominantly focuses on destroying fat cells, but does not remove stretched skin. These treatments can also be used for stubborn fat in and around the bra line.
At DRV Skin we use Deoxycholic acid that is sold under the brand name Belkyra. The product used is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is found naturally in our bodies, in bile that breaks down fat for absorption. Similarly, once injected, the fat cells are destroyed and this then allows your body to safely absorb it.

Our doctor will examine you to work out your aesthetic outcomes and to ensure you are the right candidate for the treatment.
The treatment usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Numbing cream and occasionally local anaesthetic is used to provide comfort during the procedure. The product is then injected through small needles into several areas in the neck.
Every patient is different, but generally most will need 2 to 3 treatments to see the outcomes desired. Two vials are commonly used per treatment.
Once injected into the treatment area, the fat cells undergo a process whereby they are broken down. In the neck area below the chin, when the fat cells are destroyed, they never return again.
During the procedure there can be some stinging that is mitigated with the use of topical and local anaesthetic. After the procedure, ice helps as well as simple analgesia. This usually settles in a few days. The skin over the area can be sensitive and sore for a few weeks. Swelling straight after the procedure can be quite pronounced at least for 48 hours. Bruising is to be expected as well.
Occasionally the area can also be numb and this may last for up to 8 weeks. As the fat cells are destroyed a lumpy feeling may be felt over the neck around the 4 to 6 weeks mark.
